Future Light Orphanage

Our Email Foster Parent Program began in fall 2000 at the Future Light Orphanage (FLO), which is located about twenty minutes outside of Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

The orphanage was founded in 1992 by the renowned humanitarian Phaly Nuon.  It now supports about 250 Khmer children ranging in age from seven or eight to eighteen or so.
 

1. Well managed
2. Computers and internet access are in place
3. At least one staff member is proficient in English and computer skills
4. There is a genuine need and desire for the program by the director and staff

Our 56 email foster parents now support and correspond with 56 of the 250 children who are at the orphanage. If not for the Email Foster Parent Program the orphanage would not have the resources to support these additional 56 children. The majority of parents of these children have been killed in the ’97 civil war, died from aids, were killed in various accidents, have abandoned them, or are are simply too poor to support them.

The children now have the opportunity to go to public school, receive additional schooling at the orphanage, live in a safe and loving environment and even have the opportunity to go to college. They also have the benefit of receiving encouragement, guidance and love through email letters from their foster parents.

Having gotten to know these children, I shudder to think what they would be doing now if not for their wonderful email foster parents and the staff at FLO plus the additional support from the Rotary Club of Honolulu Sunrise.

Foster parents and boosters are also helping all 250 kids at the orphanage by providing daily vitamins and health care, helping with construction projects such as a library, dorm and playground, funding a traditional Khmer dance program and more.

All children must attend school, do their homework and be in good standing. They must also study computer and English at the orphanage as well as do their share of the daily chores.
 

The relationships between foster children and parents continue to flourish. Pictures and heartfelt letters are exchanged regularly and some parents have even visited their kids at the orphanage. Many plan to do so in the future.
